Diamonds of Fury

Book One of Dead Husbands Never Looked So Good Series

Diamonds of Scorn (Book 2) is in the editing process

NEW BLOG: Part 3 of Losing a Loved One and Learning to Live Again-A Personal ExperienceDepression, Reflection & Loneliness has been posted under Blogs on this website. Part 4-Acceptance and Recovery will be posted in October.

This was a difficult piece to write. After drafting Part One, I pulled out my journal to confirm my recall and re-lived it as I read the pages.  The emotions burst forth…and I cried. Here is an excerpt from my diary:

I can’t, out of my own selfishness to have him with me, deny him the right to a quality life with…how do I word this? Words are failing me. If he can’t have a reasonable quality of life from his perspective, I should be, I will be willing to let him go.

Part 4 – ACCEPTANCE and RECOVERY to be posted in OCTOBER. Couldn’t post in September. My apologies.

AUGUST 2023 BOOK OF THE MONTH – RECOMMENDED FOR AUTHORS:

WHAT WOULD YOUR CHARACTER DO: PERSONALITY QUIZZES FOR ANALYZING YOUR CHARACTERS by ERIC MAISEL, PH.D. and ANN MAISEL

Need to round out a character or two or three? This book can help develop their personalities.

When you are focusing on making one of your creations three dimensional, take some of the quizzes in this book. Each chapter presents a scenario, asks six questions, and offers three optional responses.  They are followed by psychological information relative to each optional answer. The end of each chapter includes additional exercises.

For some scenarios, you might want to think about how your character would respond/react early in your story versus later as he or she undergoes/progresses through their journey.

I found this book to be very helpful, making me look at different aspects of characters’ personalities.

JULY 2023 BOOK OF THE MONTH – RECOMMENDED FOR AUTHORS:

Show Don’t Tell by Sandra Gerth– For book review, please see top of Blog list on right side of home page. (Having problem posting where I want it–operator error.)

JUNE 2023 BOOK OF THE MONTH – RECOMMENDED READING FOR AUTHORS:

Write and Edit the Damn Book by Katie Salidas

I love this book! It is an excellent primer for new writers and a great refresher for those who are published. Gerunds and present participles, anyone?

It is short and an easy, quick read with helpful examples, lists, and useful forms. It covers the basics from the three elements of a story to voice and point of view, ending with chapters about self-editing, proofing, and indie publishing.

As I read it, I made notes pertinent to improving my novel I am editing. Ms. Salidas’ book inspired me to write character arcs for three people and birthed more ideas for adding tension to the story.

“The Writing Basics” chapter was well done and interesting. The six and a half page section on commas—yes, six and a half pages—proved to be of more interest to me than I expected.

The book featured several reference lists of words relative to the different senses and emotional expressions, including specific actions of different parts of the body. In a future blog, I will review a book that is dedicated to this topic.

Aside from the natural inspiration that occurs when one reads a good book on the craft of writing, Write and Edit the Damn Book by Katie Salidas provides strong basics tinged with humor. I think it deserves a place on every writer’s bookshelf.

P.S. – Thank you, Greg, for telling me about this.
